Final Project Link

https://youtu.be/AQ__v9sPFKs

For my final installation project, I was curious to see what people's opinion on college is. Many people feel that their education they receieve does not match up to the value of the cost to the school. I have heard the complaint many times and figured why not have people choose a side? My installation College Value came from a curiousity of knowing college students opinions on the matter.
What I learned that many people complain about the value of the college but don't take an interest in wanting to change that reality. Many people ignored my installation or barely glanced at it. Those who took an genuine interest picked the positive side of things which is interesting considering the amount of people I hear complain about the college experience. Overall, people are more or less satisfied also depending upon their major and their location as well as the experience with others and their friends. This was an eye opening experience for me.

Final Artist Research

Jim Campbell

Jim Campbell is an artist who has been active since 1992 according to his CV. He has created many commissions, received many awards, been apart of group and self expositions and apart of public collections.  He has made relevant work even up until March 2018.

The artwork that caught my eye was the shadow buddha. I thought it was interesting how he took a box and made a shadow of a person sitting down. I didnt realize he used a buddha for a shadow. It reminds of the idea of the shadows for my final project that I would like to use.

Final Project Proposal

For my final project I want to create a commentary in which the audience is an active participant of placing themselves in the environment they choose to identify with. The topic I wish to bring to life is the idea of college and if it is worth the amount of money is costs for most people to attend. Are we getting the most out of our education and if not, how come?

My projection will have two silhouettes of people standing in a space. Above them will have different facts, phrases, words scrolling above them that have to do with the two categories: satisfied with college or dissatisfied with college. It would be up to the participant to choose which silhouette to stand in, indicating on which stance they take.

April 9th- Project proposal
April 11-14th- Do research on college satisfactory and get opinions from others around campus
Make projection silhouttes
April 15th-18th- Find projection space and film several times to get more partcipation
April 19th-30th Edit footage together

Project 3 Documentation

Artist Statement:

When beginning something new, nobody is immediately an expert or perfect at it. Along the way, there will be people or things to guide you on your journey to help you learn. In this project, I knew I wanted a dance to be involved. Through the process of thinking thoroughly about that story I wanted to convey and the help of Mads Waterman and Lucas Esteves, we are able to show the message of it is okay to not be perfect and it is okay to stumble sometimes along the way. The dance is a message of learning from others. The dancer Mads starts out as a projection and comes into the real world due to Lucas's newfound confidence in his abilities.

With anything in life you are going to make mistakes. You are going to not understand or not know how to do something at first. Instead of letting yourself get down about, you try and try again until you get it right. The dance conveys that it is okay to look to others for guidance in order to do your best. Even if you are more confident in your abilities and you are getting the hang of it, in life it is still okay to make mistakes along the way as long as you keep on pushing through. That is what the dance and the projection represents.

Artist Research

Romy Achituv & Camille Utterback

For my artist research I chose Camille Utterback and Romy Achituv. What caught my interest is their installation "Text Rain". Participants in the installation get to play with imaginary letters with parts of their body. I think its very interesting that the letters were interactive and they participants could actually play with the installation rather than just stand in front of it and watch images on the screen.

I feel like in a way this relates to my 3rd project with the dancers in Falk. The projection of the dancer will be interacting with the live dancer and I feel inspired by their specific installation. I want the installation to be fun and creative like theirs. It leads to the possibilities for myself in the future to perhaps expand on the installation and have it interact with anyone and focus on different dance movement.

Chapter 3

My understanding of Chapter 3 is that darkness is completely engulfing. As humans, we rarely experience complete and total darkness due to our access to lights whether it be a night light in our room, street lamps, flash lights etc. In some instances, are installation may be the only time we experience complete darkness. It disorients the viewer and we lose our concept of space and placement. That is why it can be an effective form for installation art.

Mirrors and reflective surfaces also can disrupt an environment. It can also lead to loss of space and placement. Sound is also another example of immersive environment because sound can lead our minds to think we are somewhere than where actually are. Our sense dictate much of how we feel in our environment.

Project 3 Proposal

For my third project, I want to it to take place on the stage of David Falk Theatre. Many people enjoy theatre and performing. I wonder what it would be like to have a live dance interact with a dancer that is projected on the screen. I wonder what it would be like to have a dancer perhaps interact with multiple phantom dancers on the screen.
My installation will include clips of a dancer dancing around as if they are in the theatre. It may be choreographed and it may be improvised. There will be a real life dancer interacting with the projected dancer. Perhaps a story will be told about dancing with a ghost and or an evolution of the dancer of some kind.

Project 2 Documentation

Disney is a national and international corporation that most everyone if not everyone knows about. The goal of Disney is to make happy memories and fun experiences that are supposed to last a life time but at what cost? How much are you willing to pay for to keep those memories and to cherish those fun times? That is what I based my second project on for multimedia installation.
As someone who frequently visits Disney herself, I cant help but notice the consumerism and materialistic aspect that comes with Disney. You pay a pretty penny to get into the parks alone and if you want to associate the "magical" day you have had with an object, whether it be ears, clothing, shoes, etc... you also must once again pay. Set up as a gift shop display, the installation begs the question if the price is worth it and to what extent is the consumer brainwashed by Disney to want to buy merchandise to "treasure forever".

Artist Research 2

Jennifer and Kevin McCoy
I chose to do my artist research on Jennifer and Kevin McCoy because ever since we went over them briefly in class one day, I thought that their work and the collaboration on their work was very interesting. They explore the concept of different filmmaking genres, language, and sculpture. A lot of the work produces imagery that challenge people to question what they see and a lot of their work is from the perspective of the camera.

The piece of work I chose to focus on for the artist research is called "Broker". This was filmed on the seventy seventh floor of one the Trump towers and was also projected onto different screens in the building. This project was a commentary on the luxury's of the wealthy and the successful. The video that comes with the installation is very robotic and gives an uneasy feeling about the futuristic aspect of the piece.

Project Proposal 2

For my second project, I want to give the viewer the experience of Disney. As someone who loves Disney and is frequently at the parks, I know how overwhelming it can be to a person who perhaps does not get to go as much as someone like me gets to. Disney gives people a magical feeling but there is always the sense of not being able to see absolutely everything which can be discouraging and overwhelming.
My installation will include different clips of my trips to Disney going on at the same time. These clips will be from different days and from different parks. As well as clips I will be flashing images taken from either PhotoPass Photographers and photos that are taken when you automatically ride the rides. These images will be projected onto various Disney merchandise that I own to also represent that as the countless things to do at the parks, there is also countless amounts of merchandise to see as well.

Project 1: Nightmare

Everyone has nightmares or has felt like running from something. In my project Nightmare, through non-linear form of storytelling, I wanted to convey what it is like to go to sleep at night and have your subconscious attack you with your fears. I wanted to show that no matter how far you run or how much you run, you cannot escape the inevitable. If you keep running from the issue and let the nightmare take control, you are just robbing yourself of precious time.
This concept is personal to me. Towards the end of 2018, I was going through many personal issues in which I felt like I was constantly on the run. Whether it would be literally walking away from my problems or mentally running from them and not facing them, I knew I had to do what I needed to eventually. There was the version of me that thought I could get away with not facing the issues and there was the other version of me that knew that I needed to face the reality of my situation. I had to give in and face the issue because in life, time is of the essence. I accepted what my fate was at the time.

Artist Research 1: Sabrina Ratte

The artist I chose to do my first artist research on is Sabrina Ratte. The reason I chose her is because I am intrigued on her use of the digital to create very unique works. I feel that her work and area of study is very relevant to me and what I am currently studying. She prefers to work in video, as do I, and she integrates 3D animation and feedback into her works. I respect the she pushes the boundaries on the physical and virtual world.

Sabrina's work "Built in Views" is my favorite. The animation of the installation within itself is very impressive. It looks as if you have been transported to a new place. The room she uses is also very clever. It appears as if she uses mirrors and rotation walls to her advantage in order to make the viewer feel that they are completed enclosed in the space and transported into a different realm. This work inspires me to learn how she has accomplished this and wanting to be able to work like this of my own.

Project Progress 2

Here is my second progress post! This is the video in order of continuity before broken up into quadrants and before sound!

Project 1 Progress

Here is some pictures of the editing process for my 1st project!

Project Proposal

For my first project, I want to explore the idea of self sabotage. I believe that most of the time, a person’s worst enemy can be themselves. Everyone has inner demons that linger in the back of their mind that frighten them into running away from the issues they are presented with in life. Whether or not you choose to confront the issues presented or run from them is entirely up to you.

In my narrative, a man will be trapped in a nightmare with himself where tries to escape from reality, also represented as a clone of himself. The man will run through corridors, try to escape through doors, elude the figure by going up stairs to no avail. The version of himself that represents reality will present him with an iPhone to show him he is running out of time. It is then up to him to decide if he will confront his reality head on or if he will try to run away, never coming to terms that he must face the outcome of his situation.

Introduction

Hello!

My name is Kristen Yurovchak and I am a senior Digital Arts major. My plans for the future are to use my degree by working in post production and video editing for television and film. I also have an interest in photography, specifically taking portraits of people.

For awhile now I have wondered about projection mapping and how someone can create amazing images and project them onto surfaces. I absolutely love Disney and the firework show Happily Ever After as well as anytime they hold special holiday events include projection mapping as part of their shows. I hope to grasp the understanding of how these things are created and hopefully be on my way to creating projection maps too and have a better appreciation and understanding for the art.
